Flexible Dieting

==History==
Flexible dieting, otherwise known by its popular acronym IIFYM (if it fits your macros) is a form of dieting that allows the dieter to eat any variety of foods as long as the total macronutrients (proteins, carbohydrates, fats, and ethanol) equal the recommended daily allotted calories for the individual. A surplus of calories results in weight gain and possible muscle gain,〔http://www.acaloriecounter.com/diet/how-many-calories-to-build-muscle-or-gain-weight/〕 while a deficit of calories results in weight loss and probable fat loss.
Flexible dieting was first popularized in the natural bodybuilding scene in the early 2000s. The dieting method was received with much criticism among the online fitness community. Natural Bodybuilding advocates Layne Norton (PhD) and Alan Aragon helped to educate people on the method by publishing research articles and journals.〔http://alanaragon.com/researchreview〕 Over time the method has become popularized in strength and conditioning circles, as well as Crossfit and other fitness outlets largely through the use of social media. One of the main tenets of flexible dieting is that there are no food source restrictions and meal timing is not crucial to the success of the diet. Dieters are not discouraged to eat any type of "junk food", just as they are not required to specifically eat lean meats, whole grains, and vegetables. This approach differs from notorious diets such as Paelolithic Diet and the Southbeach Diet.
